Local Engineers to Judge as Middle School Students Compete in Straw Tower Challenge
The 3rd Annual Straw Tower Challenge takes center stage, literally, on Friday, September 16th in the auditorium of the Global Learning Charter Public School. The top 16 teams - four from each middle school grade - will compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons in this highly anticipated contest. But the winners are all of the students in grades 5-8.
Students are learning the Engineering Design Process, part of the MA science standards, middle school science teacher Polly Zajac said.
"Students determine the need or problem, research and choose possible solutions, and then synthesize what might be the best solution. They build a prototype, test it and evaluate it. The students then communicate their results and reflect for possibilities for redesign.
"These are critical scientific thinking and problem solving skills required for 21st century learning," Zajac added.
