It is a year of excitement because we are celebrating the school’s 20th year as a charter school as well as looking forward to moving into our new STEAM Center. As our banner that flies proudly in front of our main campus states, it’s been “20 years of building lifelong learners.”

It was 2002 when the Global Learning Charter Public School welcomed its first students. We want everyone to know not only how far we've come but our plans for the future! GLCPS was the first charter school in New Bedford. It was arguably the first school in the area to incorporate technology into every classroom and to put a computer into every student's hands. Today, we are looking forward to expanding into our new state-of-the-art STEAM Education Center which is being created in the building adjacent to the Main Campus building. This building will house a Maker Space, fully equipped science labs, art rooms with a working kiln, and a beautiful music room.

This is a defining moment for the future of the Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS). The school’s Board of Trustees is launching the process to develop a five-year strategic plan before handing the task over to a committee of diverse stakeholders. The Board will review the school’s 20-year history and reflect on its successes and challenges, and review the school’s mission statement to determine whether it is still relevant or if changes are needed. The Board will also participate in a SWOT analysis, identifying and analyzing the school’s internal strengths and weaknesses, and external opportunities and threats that shape current and future operations. It is the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) that dictates the role and responsibilities of a charter school’s Board of Trustees, as outlined on the DESE website:
“As public agents authorized by the state, the members of the board of trustees (board) of a charter school are responsible for governing the school and hold the charter for the school, as it is granted by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). A strong board defines the mission of the school, develops school policies and changes them when appropriate, hires qualified personnel to manage the school's day-to-day operations and holds them accountable for meeting established goals, and formulates a long-range plan and charter school accountability plan that will ensure the school's continued stability.”

The GLCPS community will kick off the new school year with its annual Back to School Night BBQ, and this year we're throwing a block party! The event will take place on Tuesday, August 23rd from 5 - 7 PM on Nye Street. The street between Ashley Blvd. and Acushnet Avenue will be blocked off for the event. Normally, we're set up in the parking lot for the Back to School Night BBQ. This year, however, due to the ongoing construction in our much-anticipated Joan and Irwin Jacobs STEAM Education Center, we are doing things a little differently. Students and families will be treated to an old-fashioned cookout. Families will also be able to receive individualized informational packets with student schedules, collect pre-ordered school uniforms, and speak to teachers and staff. The Back to School Night BBQ is one of the school's best attended events.

Organizers of the gala have made a few changes that promise to make the event even more fun than in previous years. They have changed the location, hired a new caterer, and added a full (cash) bar. There will still be an auction which is already live and online so that bidders can get a jump on some excellent treasures.
Due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases, GLCPS will remain in the remote teaching and learning model at least through February 28, 2021, Executive Director Stephen Furtado announced today. "It was our hope to begin the hybrid model at the end of January but unfortunately the number of Covid cases continues to increase in New Bedford and the surrounding towns," said Dr. Furtado. "We have been told by medical authorities that the number of cases will continue to increase as a result of holiday gatherings and traveling that occurred outside of our State."

(This letter was addressed to GLCPS staff on the eve of the attack on our US Capitol on January 6, 2021 by supporters of President Trump as Congress was moving toward ratifying the election of Joseph Biden as the next president of the United States.)

As a political science major and student in Constitutional law, I have tried to capture my emotions over today’s events. It is easy to cast blame and to point fingers. I, too, want to vent and allow my temper to get the best of me. We have witnessed a display of violence against our institutions that has not been seen since 1814 when the Capitol and the White House were burned to the ground. Unfolding before our eyes was an attack, not against buildings, but against the Constitution; a document that clearly states the process of validating a presidential election. That same Constitution gives all of us the right to protest but not in a violent way.

First, the Board of Trustees and I have decided to begin winter vacation earlier than scheduled. Therefore, the last day of school before the winter vacation is Friday, December 18, 2020. We will return to our normal academic schedule on Monday, January 4, 2021.

Second, as we approach the next remote learning deadline I want to update you regarding our next steps. Our decisions are based on the data we receive from the Department of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control. We have watched the number of Covid-19 cases increase significantly in New Bedford and throughout the State. This second surge is troubling and the number of cases could continue to increase throughout the holiday season. New Bedford continues to be in the “red zone”. Given this information GLCPS will remain remote through January 31.

The 3rd Annual Straw Tower Challenge takes center stage, literally, on Friday, September 16th in the auditorium of the Global Learning Charter Public School. The top 16 teams - four from each middle school grade - will compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons in this highly anticipated contest. But the winners are all of the students in grades 5-8.

Students are learning the Engineering Design Process, part of the MA science standards, middle school science teacher Polly Zajac said.

"Students determine the need or problem, research and choose possible solutions, and then synthesize what might be the best solution. They build a prototype, test it and evaluate it. The students then communicate their results and reflect for possibilities for redesign.

"These are critical scientific thinking and problem solving skills required for 21st century learning," Zajac added.
