What Lies Beneath New Bedford?

If you could go beneath New Bedford, what would you see? GLCPS art teacher Jon Vecchiarelli, posed that question to 5th graders before they set out to create a mural of what lies beneath the city. Measuring approximately 4 feet by 14 feet, the mural is on display in the school’s lobby. It is large and detailed, realistic and whimsical at the same time.

Books Rule at 3rd Annual Read-a-thon

Students, staff and guests celebrated authors and books during the school's 3rd annual GLCPS Read-a-thon. Students were spread out through 17 reading rooms. Each room had its own theme. The event is organized by the middle school and high school English and Humanities teachers.

Global Karate Academy Expands to Meet Demand

Global Karate Academy (GKA) is expanding its schedule to accommodate growing interest in the program. GKA is committed to helping as many students as possible reach their goals and foster a lasting connection with our Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) family.

Bristol County District Attorney Visits, Donates Technology To 8th Grade

The students in Maria Lehning's 8th grade history class were happy to demonstrate how they're using their new Smart TV to learn about history to their special guest recently. Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn visited the school to meet Ms. Lehning's students, and learn about how they were using their new technology tool.

GLCPS Bonds With University of Glasgow, Scotland (U.K.)

High school history teacher Heidi Eastman has another accomplishment to add to a long list; and, all with the best interests of GLCPS students in mind. Recently, professors from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, visited the Jacobs Center, GLCPS’ downtown campus, at the invitation of Ms. Eastman. During their visit to New Bedford, the educators met with students and teachers, as well as Executive Director Stephen Furtado and Principal Lena Pires.

Grant Helps Level Technology Gap For Students

Students with no internet access at home no longer have to search for Wi-Fi to complete their assignments at home. The school applied for and received a Homework Gap Grant from the wireless provider Kajeet® for a ten-unit SmartSpot® solution which provides safe mobile, connectivity to help students access the internet. GLCPS is one of only 30 schools nationwide to receive the grant.

Students Can Now Sign Up for After-School Enrichment Programs

GLCPS offers more than 30 after-school programs throughout the school year for any student that wants to expand their knowledge and skill base even more. These programs and clubs include everything from sports to art exploration to creating writing to games. The programs are free. We also offer transportation.

School Picture Day Rescheduled

School Picture Day has been postponed until Monday, September 10th due to the unexpected early dismissal on September 6th. Students will be wearing their school uniforms for Picture Day. Please plan accordingly.

Back to School Night is Almost Here!

It is the first event of every year and a favorite one! All students and families, along with alumni, board members and community partners are welcome to join us at our annual 'backyard' cookout on August 21st from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.

Evening of International Music to Benefit GLCPS Music Program

Several area musicians will perform for “A Special Evening of International Music” to benefit the Global Learning Charter Public School’s (GLCPS) award-winning music program. Among the musicians who are headlining the event are the versatile Chops Turner and his band, as well as the multilingual vocalist Grace. Other musicians in the line-up include P. Lowe, Manny Escobar and J Summers.

The event takes place on Saturday, June 30th at the Whaler Inn and Suites (Ryan’s Pub) located at 500 Hathaway Road in New Bedford.
