As the Director of College & Career Counseling, Ashley McPherson leads the College & Career Center team to make sure that every GLCPS student receives the support needed for academic readiness and successful future planning. A staff member since 2015, Ms McPherson established the school's College & Career Center. Programming includes all students in grades, 5-12. Counselors challenge middle school students to explore their career interests. 8th grade students work with teachers and high school counselors to develop their individual 10 Year Plan; these students present this Presentation of Learning within our school-wide community. High school students carefully plan their academic pathway and work with the CCC (College & Career Center) Team in grade-level seminars during MyCAP periods. College and career advising for 11th and 12th grade students and families involves significant support in the college application process, financial aid advising, individual FAFSA completion, and career and military exploration. Personalized individual academic support is available and offered to all students through regular grade monitoring, student interventions, and family communication.
Positive relationships with students, families and community partners is at the heart of the College & Career Center work at GLCPS. Ms. McPherson supervises the CCC Team, students in the College & Career Center, and all program implementation. The College & Career Center hosts two specialized College & Career Counselors. One counselor supports students enrolled in Advanced Courses (Advanced Placement - AP or Dual Enrollment), and another counselor supervises the Internship/Work Study Program, Mentoring Program, and the Alumni Association (supporting all graduates in students' post-secondary critical years).
Ms. McPherson earned a Bachelors' in Family, Youth, and Community Sciences from the University of Florida and Masters' degree in Counseling from Wake Forest University with a specialization in School Counseling. Ms. McPherson holds School Counseling and Administrative licenses in Massachusetts.
"In high school, no one ever asked me what I wanted to do after high school - nevermind help me plan out the necessary steps early enough. I never want that to be the case for my GLCPS students." Ms. McPherson remembered.
