The History of the Homecoming

Did you know that the tradition of a “homecoming” event has existed for a century? The “Homecoming” was used as a way to welcome college alumni back for a celebration. Typically, the colleges would throw a pep rally or parade and then host a football game. It was common for alumni to dress in the school’s colors or in some way that represented the school’s mascot. It is still a tradition at colleges and universities to this day. Colleges and universities could celebrate the accomplishments of the alumni while shining a light on their institution. T

While homecoming is still a yearly college tradition looked forward to by most, it has expanded beyond just college. Homecoming has become an annual event amongst many high schools in the U.S. Like colleges, high schools still keep the tradition of football games and pep rallies to show school spirit. However, it was adapted to fit high school students more. Every year, a homecoming dance would take place before the football game. Then, at the football game, the homecoming king and queen are crowned on the field. It was a way to celebrate and show school spirit, but also give teens a chance to get fancy.

While GLCPS has a homecoming, it is done a little differently.  We may not have a football team but we can still get dressed up and hold a dance! When speaking to one of the members of the homecoming committee, Senior Kevin Riz Delacruz who is on the homecoming dance planning committee, explained, “one of the main reasons we have a homecoming is so that all of the high school students have a chance to be together outside of the usual busy school day.” When asked about why the homecoming theme is red carpet he said, “it’s just one of those things that students have discussed in the past, but it has never happened, so we figured, why not?” There is a lot that goes into this event: ticket sales, decorating, and this year the food is being made by Mr. Whitley, an experienced cook and a GLCPS staff member. Seniors could even sign up to help with the food prep.

Homecoming is a special tradition that has been carried on by many generations. It is seen as a way to celebrate all alumni and their accomplishments throughout the years, express the pride of the school through pep rallies and football games, and even host dances. This event still is highly anticipated in schools throughout America, and will continue to be. It is a way to bring families, students, staff, alumni, and communities together to celebrate. As well as celebrating, it is an opportunity for high school students to get dressed up and have a fun night of dancing and socializing.
