A Very Special Student of the Month Breakfast

November 22, 2024 - The Student of the Month breakfast is a tradition at GLCPS. It is a way for teachers to recognize students who embody our school’s Core Values of Hard Work, Respect, Trust and Honesty.

This past Thursday’s Student of the Month Breakfast was made even more special as the GLCPS community honored local veterans, and active and retired military personnel all of whom have made multiple sacrifices for our country.

GLCPS Home/School Liaison Cyndi Colson, herself a US Navy veteran, organized the event. “I think it's a great opportunity to honor the students who follow our Core Values while celebrating our military personnel and veterans who are taught to follow those same core values,” Mrs. Colson said.

The students said it was a good way to honor local service men and women especially as the nation celebrated Veterans Day earlier this month. Jarilis Garcia, a tenth grade student, said ”this is a good way to give tribute to the veterans who protect the country.”

While the military personnel who attended the breakfast were happy to speak with students as all were enjoying a hearty breakfast, it wasn’t about the recognition for them. “I don’t bask in it. This is my job” said US Army Grade 5 Chief Warrant Officer Daryn Gomes, adding "I love what I do.”

Students seemed pleased to have the opportunity to speak with the guests with some saying they felt inspired by what they had accomplished. Sophia Merrey, a tenth grade student noted “it does bring awareness to special topics.”
