GLCPS Royals Nearly Pull Off Comeback Against King's Academy

By Eric Santos

The GLCPS Royals took a 34-25 loss to the King’s Academy JV team in their fourth game of the season. Both teams competed with high energy and defensive prowess, as King’s Academy held a 19-13 lead at halftime.

GLCPS faced a 12-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, though head coach Jonathan Dyer came close to orchestrating a comeback. The Royals fought to within six points, nearly shrinking the gap further, before King’s Academy halted momentum in the final minutes.

Ishmmael Martinez recorded five points and four rebounds as a key contributor for the Royals. He attested to the Royals’ determination throughout the match.

“Both the teams were dogs,” said Martinez. “We were fighting until the end of the very last quarter. We were very athletic, and that’s a good thing for the team.”

Ezven Cruz Mendez totaled six points and two rebounds. Leo Cabral, Adrian Alves, and Junior Torres each contributed two points. Xavier Echevarria-Mojica grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Marwane Oustat was a clutch performer, scoring six points in the final quarter. He plans to leverage his height when the two squads face later in the month.

“I’m going to practice jumping higher, to help defend for the team. I’d say I probably base my game on Victor Wembanyama because he’s tall.”

GLCPS’ next game against King’s Academy is scheduled for Thursday, January 29.
