Celebrating Our Educators
By Emma Moniz, Class of 2026
Education would not exist without teachers. They are the glue that holds the expansive world of learning together. This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, so naturally, Global Learning Charter Public School is going to celebrate all of the teachers and staff as a way to say thank you for all they do. A national day of recognition for teachers originated in 1953 when First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt petitioned for a National Teacher’s Day. In 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association declared a full week dedicated to celebrating teachers. For this week, teachers around the country are celebrated for the monumental impact they’ve had on so many lives.
As a thank you to GLCPS’ principal Lena Pires, students were asked to write short messages to Mrs. Pires. Many students wrote their thanks for all that she has done throughout the years, and others wrote small meaningful messages to her.

Students interning for Darlease Monteiro, Director of School Culture, worked together to make a board designed as a quilt, so that the student messages looked like a quilt. Adrian Rosado, one of the interns working on the quilt said, “I think it’s important that Mrs. Pires has something given to celebrate her. Usually for Teacher Appreciation Week the focus is on the teachers and not the administration as well. They’re teachers too regardless of being in a classroom.” When Principal Pires received her message board from the students earlier this week she was overjoyed. Often-times duringTeacher Appreciation Week, she spends a considerable amount of time making sure everyone else is appreciated. It’s a nice change for the roles to be reversed.
GLCPS senior Jaslin Arita Hernandez has always had a deep connection to the staff. When asked what she appreciated the most about the staff was, “no matter what, the teachers are always positive. I never once walked into school and thought that I wasn’t supported, or turned a corner and staff were not smiling and saying hi while passing by. I really appreciate the positive environment teachers have built in the classroom and in the hallways, it makes all the difference.”
As Teacher Appreciation Week comes to an end, many realize that it is important to express their appreciation more than once a week each year. Teachers touch so many lives and are often underappreciated. Those who are fortunate enough to receive an education should thank their teachers for all they have taught them and let them know how appreciative they are for their hard work inside and outside of the classroom. It is because of teachers that the world is where it is today.
