Summer Academic and Enrichment Program 2021


We are excited to be able to offer our three-week Summer program to GLCPS students. Engaging academic classes in the morning, and in the afternoon, enrichment activities. Also, our Friday Field Days are back! 
The Summer program will begin on July 12 and end on July 30. It will run Monday - Friday. 
8:00am - 11:55am: Academic Support
12:00pm - 3:00pm: Enrichment Activities
  • Transportation is provided.
  • Lunch is provided.


A Sneak Peak at Enrichment Offerings for Summer of 2021

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL)- This will be a group of mixed ability students.  Beginners to advanced signers are welcome. Students will learn the basics of American Sign Language including finger-spelling, numbers, classifications and early conversational skills. Advanced students (those who are familiar with ASL) will have the opportunity to build their skills.  We will also explore some of the deaf culture.


ART - "Watercolor, Audubon Birds of America" with Alison Wells: Contemporary Fine Arts Painter Alison Wells will teach this summer program. Learn to draw, as well as paint in traditional watercolor techniques, the magnificent birds of John James Audubon's 'Birds of America.' Art supplies will be provided. 


BOARD GAMES - If you enjoy battling your wits or simply playing a fun or competitive game with your friends, board game club will be the place for you! We will play a variety of board games, ranging from long-form games like Monopoly, brain games like Trivial Pursuit as well as many others you have interest in. This is made for anyone interested in playing games with friends.


COLOR GUARD - Colorguard is a sport in which there is a choreographed routine of dance, flag, and rifle spinning.  In this program you will learn the fundamentals of this sport while having fun.


DIGITAL PRODUCTION & ART - These 2 programs will run together during the summer program.  When you sign up for this option you will be doing both.  The descriptions of each follows:

  • Do you want to know how to produce your own song from beginning to end? That means: make the beats, write the lyrics, record the vocals and remix the song. In this program, you will learn the essentials of what it takes to make a hit. We will be producing our own beats with digital software, explore recording techniques, learn to remix and sample our favorite songs for inspirations, and understand the ins and outs of being a DJ, Producer and Performer.  This part of the program will be taught by DJ Anghelli [The official City of New Bedford’s DJ- #STEAMTHESTREETS DJ- Blest Energy’s DJ] Who is currently a teacher, touring DJ and has 10+ years in the industry.
  • Summer Art - Place Based Art Week - This week of the summer enrichment will focus on making art connecting to the diversity and beauty of our neighborhood.  Nature found at Riverside Park and murals on display throughout the Acushnet Ave business district will help inspire ideas.  Students will then be provided supplies to create individual and group art pieces. This part of the program will be taught by our own Mr. Vecchiarelli.


DUNGEONS & DRAGONS - Who's up for a dungeon crawl with Mr Zajac as your DM? We will design and play a campaign.  This will be tabletop gaming and role-playing in a system and version to be determined based on what everyone has.  *Warning this is not a continuation of last years campaign.


INTRAMURAL SPORTS - Students  will participate in fun activities such as dodgeball, volleyball, kickball, and much more. This program is designed for students who are interested in playing friendly competitive games with friends.  This program takes place at Brooklawn Park.  Please come prepared with water, headgear and sunscreen.


KNITTING - Students will learn how to knit using a circular wheel.  They will create various projects to take home.


MINECRAFT - Minecraft is a game where you dig (mine) and build (craft) different kinds of 3D blocks within a large world of varying terrains and habitats to explore. We will build, create and game together.


PHOTO EDITING - Students will learn great tools in Photoshop (online version) to make either slight adjustments or massive changes to their images. they'll learn how to tweak color, contrast and saturation to take their images from good to great in a few quick steps using digital photography software. A phone with picture taking capabilities or digital camera is suggested but not required. 


SCRATCH - Students will learn how to program various games using Scratch.  Scratch is a visual programming language that allows students to create their own interactive stories, games and animations. As students design projects, they learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.


SEWING - Students will learn the basics of hand sewing.  They will create various projects to take home and will be able to keep the sewing kit used during the program.
