What is it really like to be a student at GLCPS? Is it fun? Is it grueling? Boring? Exciting?
For some answers, I went straight to the source: My fellow students. What I learned was that most students from 5th grade through senior year, genuinely LIKE being part of the GLCPS family! In fact, the overall consensus was that being a student here comes with many perks.
I spoke to several fifth grade students who are in the beginning stages of their GLCPS journey and the consensus is their learning experience has been enhanced since coming to our school. They agreed that their teachers are dedicated to driving the best experience for students. “They are really supportive about what you do and what you want to be,” said Joseph, one of the 5th grade students I spoke to. “They are so kind,” he added.
They also pointed out that our teachers always make sure kids are doing their best work. With the encouragement of her teachers, Kaleirimar, another 5th grade student noted “I understand everything and fly through it.”
You might be wondering about my fellow high school students, many of whom started out here as 5th graders themselves. What do they think about their GLCPS experience?
“I feel more prepared for the future, especially when I start applying to colleges, said Leonardo Cabral, now in his junior year of high school. Sure, he said, thinking of your future after high school can be stressful but with the support he receives from his teachers and the College and Career Center, he says he is not as worried.
Both younger and older students alike pointed out the benefit of the after-school enrichment and academic programs. Dayana, a 5th grade student, loves how there are ‘so many options’ for after-school clubs and activities. Senior Ivette Terrero described how she is able to advance in her skills with after-school activities. “I am glad I get the opportunity to work better on my musical skills,” she said.
The bottom line is that when it comes to GLCPS, there are many opportunities and options for students. No one is overlooked.
