It's All About the Food!

Written by Emma Moniz, Class of 2026

There’s a new hot topic amongst the GLCPS students; the food. The students at this school take their school lunches very seriously; always ready to try something new. Formerly working with Sodexo to provide school lunches, now GLCPS is working with the New Bedford Public School Central Kitchen to serve hot meals every day. This change has attracted a lot of attention amongst the students, eliciting a number of different reactions. When speaking to students, I first wanted to hear all of the good things they had to say, and I wanted to know what some of their favorite meals were.

Senior Dhruv Patel kicked it off with his observation that “although there were a decent amount of options before, there is now a bigger variety for us to choose from.” He then went on to say, “I really like when they serve us breakfast for lunch.”

A large number of students like the pancake and egg combo as a lunch meal, as well as glazed chicken drumsticks, and the ravioli bites. Not only is there a larger assortment of meals, but there are finally more sides to choose from. Now with almost every meal, a student can choose from an assortment of fruits, and carrots or celery, as well.

Along with the new change comes some different opinions and suggestions. Although many students were glad for a wider variety, some students said that they actually liked having a smaller assortment because they could always count on it being something they liked. Also, a student who is  a vegetarian noted that there are less options for people who don’t eat meat.  “The change is nice,” she said “but there aren’t as many options for people like me, now. Sure, there are the sunbutter sandwiches, but before they used to have salads.” It all comes down to the food service company. Let’s hope that in the future they add the salads back as an option.

Regardless of the change, overall it is a welcome change nonetheless for the GLCPS staff and students.
