Academic Achievement Celebrated at GLCPS Event

March 21, 2025 - Just a few years ago, the GLCPS community would gather to celebrate the academic achievements of middle school students who had earned Highest Honors and Honors. Sadly, the Covid pandemic brought those, and many other events, to a screeching halt. All that changed this week as the academic honors program was resurrected.

On Tuesday, March 18th, more than 100 family members packed the GLCPS auditorium to celebrate student academic achievements.

Much credit goes to 5th grade science teacher, Mrs. Zajac, for encouraging the administration to bring back this recognition night. Credit also goes to high school humanities teacher Jess Ross for helping to make it a reality.

Ms. Ross explained why she felt this celebration was so important, “First of all, we held these celebrations before Covid. Secondly, students put in a lot of effort every term, and it’s important to take a moment to recognize that. Finally, families, students, and teachers are all so busy, and sometimes even the smallest acknowledgment of a student’s hard work can get lost if we don’t mark the occasion.”

For Ms. Ross, bringing back this event was about giving students the recognition they deserve and motivating them to continue striving for excellence. Mrs. Pires agrees. “Sometimes, we lose focus on the important things. We get so busy and forget to celebrate the wins,” said Mrs. Pires. Everyone involved agreed that recognizing student accomplishments is essential. Ms. Ross summed it up well:

“It’s wonderful to be proud of your own achievements and those of your family and friends.”

Principal Mrs. Pires wants to remind students that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, “We are proud of you! Your dedication and effort are recognized!”
