The celebration, which runs from September 15 through October 15, is an annual tradition at GLCPS and reflects the school’s commitment to honoring the diverse backgrounds of its students and families. Throughout the month, classroom and common spaces will feature cultural displays that highlight the achievements, traditions, and stories of Hispanic and Latinx communities.
Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, a date that marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, followed by Chile on September 18 and Belize on September 21. These historic milestones serve as the foundation for a national observance that recognizes generations of Hispanic and Latinx Americans whose contributions have shaped the arts, sciences, public service, business, education, and civic life across the United States.
At GLCPS, the month-long will include classroom lessons, cultural displays, and opportunities for students to share their own heritage and family traditions.
“Hispanic Heritage Month gives our students a chance to learn from one another and to celebrate the cultures that enrich our school community,” said GLCPS Executive Director Stephen Furtado, Jr. “We’re proud to celebrate the achievements of Hispanic and Latinx Americans and to provide our students with opportunities to connect with and learn from diverse traditions.”
GLCPS has long emphasized cultural awareness as a core element of its mission. The school’s annual observance of Hispanic Heritage Month reinforces that mindfulness by fostering understanding, pride, and connection among students with a wide range of backgrounds.
