Born and raised in New Bedford, Lena Pires is the first and only one of six siblings to complete a college degree. First generation Portuguese, both of her parents spoke only Portuguese and could not read or write. Mrs. Pires has a BA in Electrical Engineering from UMass Dartmouth and her M.Ed this Spring. She left the field of engineering to become a teacher eleven years ago, when she started at GLCPS as a mathematics/science teacher. Mrs. Pires became Assistant Principal in fall of 2007 following completion of her Principals Licensure, also through UMass Dartmouth. In 2011 she became the Middle School Principal and in 2014 principal of GLCPS. Prior to GLCPS, she was an engineer at Helix Technology and from 1997 - 2000 worked in this capacity at Raytheon. Married and the devoted mother of two young sons, Mrs. Pires lives in New Bedford. She also serves as Vice President on the Board of the local YWCA.
