Students Turn Their Passion Into Plan to Help Homeless

Their plan to provide care packages to the homeless wasn't easy and they'll admit it did not go as smoothly as they thought it would. After editing several drafts of a letter to area businesses asking for donations of toiletries, socks, gloves and other items that most of us take for granted, they mailed out dozens of letters. They received very few responses but BJ's Wholesale sent a $50 gift card that gave them a starting point. They also asked GLCPS staff and families to donate. They designed their own flyer and displayed it throughout the school, asking for items for the homeless. The GLCPS community came through with more donations. Things were looking up!

Finally, Merly and Kaitlyn put together 39 care packages. Accompanied by Ms. Monteiro, they delivered the care packages to Sister Rose House, a homeless shelter for men. They delivered clothing items that they had collected to Mercy, Meals and More. They were able to learn how both the Sister Rose House, a homeless shelter, and Mercy Meals and More, a soup kitchen, help the homeless on a daily basis.

At GLCPS, an education is much more than sitting in a classroom taking notes and studying for tests. Merly and Kaitlyn were able to follow their passion, and as a result, developed both character and skills they will need as they move beyond high school.
