Timing of Solar Eclipse Leads To Decision To Dismiss Students Early

On Monday, April 8, 2024, there will be a total eclipse of the sun beginning around 2:00 pm and lasting about two hours until approximately 4:30 pm. While no location in Massachusetts will experience the total eclipse, it is important to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our students during this time.

GLCPS will dismiss students at 1:00 pm on Monday due to concerns that the eclipse will be occurring during the normal dismissal time. It is not safe to send students outside while the eclipse is taking place as it increases the risk of their eyes being damaged if they look directly at the sun without proper eye protection.

Regular sunglasses will not prevent damage to the eyes from staring at the sun during an eclipse. Only special eclipse glasses can protect the eyes from possible permanent damage from such an event.

Taking precautions will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience during the upcoming solar eclipse.
